Tattoo Healing Guide
Remove the Saniderm in 3 to 4 days after it is applied. If the Saniderm comes off before that time that is totally ok. It is simply an extra protector but not necessary for the healing process. I recommend taking it off in the shower so your hands are clean and you can immediately start gently cleaning off the residue.
Avoid sweating with the Saniderm on. This means avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs and heated exercise classes. This is because the sweat will build up under the film and not have a place to go.
The tattoo looking like it is ‘inking up’ under the film is totally normal! What’s happening is your skin is trying to heal itself by creating plasma. This does not mean your tattoo is coming back out of the skin.
Once the Saniderm is removed treat your new tattoo like you would a wound. Keep it clean and hydrated until the tattoo is fully healed, 2 to 3 weeks.
To clean the tattoo use antibacterial, unscented soap and lukewarm water
Pat dry with a paper towel or allow it to air dry
To keep the tattoo hydrated apply a thin layer of fragrance free lotion or ointment, just enough to make it shine. More is not better in this case. If you apply too much lotion the tattoo will likely peel or scab because it cannot breathe properly.
Do not scratch, itch or pick at the tattoo. This may result in pulling parts of the ink out. You can pat the tattoo with your hand to soothe the itch.
Avoid direct sun exposure when the tattoo is healing and apply SPF regularly after that. Minimizing sun exposure will greatly impact the tattoo healing as well as how well the tattoo holds up over time.
How you take care of the tattoo when it is healing will greatly impact how the tattoo will settle into the skin.
